Mud, Dust, Shock, Water And Who-Knows-What-Else Proof Laptop From RuffPC

I’ve been meaning to write this review for a few days now, but due to a whole host of problems, (including but not limited to me catching a bad case of the flu, my internet connection completely pooping on me and a few family issues) I’ve not had chance to write this article, that I’ve been itching to write ever since I saw RuffPC pop up on my radar… What’s got me so stoked? Put it this way… We like dropping things from high heights, and generally the laptops at the TechZi labs don’t like that. MacBooks crack, VAIOs splinter, Thinkpads crawl up and drown themselves, whilst Dells run away screaming before we get chance to put them through their paces.
The Ruffbook from RuffPC, however, is a whole new caliber bullet in terms of durability. In the US alone, one BILLION dollars a year is spent replacing damaged computer equipment, and that’s where the Ruffbook rolls in. Both of the computers I own (my Vista Ultimate PC and my Leopard MacBook) are powered by Core 2 Duo processors and there’s a specific reason for that. Intel Core 2 technology is the BEST on the market. With RuffPC evidently recognizing this too, they’ve kitted out the Ruffbook Tech (their higher end offering) with a blistering Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz processor.
En suite RAM? 1GB of standard DDR ram - no latency information given. HDD? An 80GB shock-mounted behemoth. Low in capacity - high in performance. A nice 14.1″ TFT LCD sunlight-readable screen (SXGA) is backed up by a reasonable onboard graphics offering - The Intel® GMA 950 Graphics Controller (128MB). At the other extreme- if you’re out of sunlight’s gaze entirely, you can choose for the spill-proof keyboard to be backlit at any point. Just remember that if you’re on the move, your battery will drain faster, and that you might be better off working by the luminescent light of the LCD.
Weighing in at 2.2kg and shifting the boat at a “not too unreasonable” $2,295 - The Ruffbook is on the hefty side. (Though the laptops do start at a measley $1,795 - ranging all the way up to a $4,795 Ruff Tablet!) If you’re working on a construction site, doing work out in a jungle or feel like insuring your laptop against the weekly occurrence of coffee spillages, then make sure you check out the Ruff lineup.
Sidenote: Ilker from The Thinking Blog is running a competition in which you can WIN yourself a Ruffbook Tech! Entry cost is NOTHING and EVERYONE is welcome. How I love the blogosphere.
Update: In regards to the Ruffbook Tech’s Core 2 Duo processor, the salespage seems to be saying “Intel® Core™ Duo ULV 2.33GHz”, whereas the Products page states that you can indeed get “Optional Core 2 Duo processors”, though I’m none the wiser as to why they’re not showing up on the order page.
