iPhone Gets GPS In Future Update

iPod Touch.

Each firmware update from Apple brings so many screams of delight from the blogosphere and then equally as many howls of horror as all those with unlocked phones scream that they’re left with a useless brick because of their own foolishness. In the 1.1.3 update for the wonderphone however, it’s looking prety certain that the iPhone will pick up some GPS-like capabilities. As Colbert Low of b5media describes it…

The update is reported to add semi-GPS capabilities, based upon cell triangulation and multi-destination SMS texting capability to the iPhone.I call the GPS function semi-GPS since there’s no GPS receiver on the Apple iPhone and it will only be using 3 Cell towers from the Mobile Providers triangulate and provide GPS-like coordinates. It won’t be as accurate as GPS tracking but at least it will work in subways and tunnels that have mobile reception.

In other words, your phone will be able to act pretty much like a GPS device would, without any extra hardware, chips, mods or additions needed to be made in order to get in working. Incredible clever, if you ask me. Which (of course) you didn’t. ;) via The Gadget Blog

Halo 3 - Getting Unlucky

Yeah - you guessed it… And you honestly can’t get more unlucky than getting trod on by a scorpion.

The second video, whilst not strictly speaking unlucky, demonstrates a rather interesting way to commit suicide - Halo style. ;)

Enjoy!

Halo 3 - Getting Lucky Part 2

Though not quite as impressive or dramatised as the last “Halo 3 - Getting Lucky“, I bring you the second installment in the series with videos from two different nutters, this time round…

Another kill via a sticky grenade - no vechile in this one.

No vehicle in the PREVIOUS this one - a very nice, very cool, very swish SPLAT above though. ;)

Mud, Dust, Shock, Water And Who-Knows-What-Else Proof Laptop From RuffPC

The Ruffbook Tech

I’ve been meaning to write this review for a few days now, but due to a whole host of problems, (including but not limited to me catching a bad case of the flu, my internet connection completely pooping on me and a few family issues) I’ve not had chance to write this article, that I’ve been itching to write ever since I saw RuffPC pop up on my radar… What’s got me so stoked? Put it this way… We like dropping things from high heights, and generally the laptops at the TechZi labs don’t like that. MacBooks crack, VAIOs splinter, Thinkpads crawl up and drown themselves, whilst Dells run away screaming before we get chance to put them through their paces.

The Ruffbook from RuffPC, however, is a whole new caliber bullet in terms of durability. In the US alone, one BILLION dollars a year is spent replacing damaged computer equipment, and that’s where the Ruffbook rolls in. Both of the computers I own (my Vista Ultimate PC and my Leopard MacBook) are powered by Core 2 Duo processors and there’s a specific reason for that. Intel Core 2 technology is the BEST on the market. With RuffPC evidently recognizing this too, they’ve kitted out the Ruffbook Tech (their higher end offering) with a blistering Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz processor.

En suite RAM? 1GB of standard DDR ram - no latency information given. HDD? An 80GB shock-mounted behemoth. Low in capacity - high in performance. A nice 14.1″ TFT LCD sunlight-readable screen (SXGA) is backed up by a reasonable onboard graphics offering - The Intel® GMA 950 Graphics Controller (128MB). At the other extreme- if you’re out of sunlight’s gaze entirely, you can choose for the spill-proof keyboard to be backlit at any point. Just remember that if you’re on the move, your battery will drain faster, and that you might be better off working by the luminescent light of the LCD. ;)

Weighing in at 2.2kg and shifting the boat at a “not too unreasonable” $2,295 - The Ruffbook is on the hefty side. (Though the laptops do start at a measley $1,795 - ranging all the way up to a $4,795 Ruff Tablet!) If you’re working on a construction site, doing work out in a jungle or feel like insuring your laptop against the weekly occurrence of coffee spillages, then make sure you check out the Ruff lineup.

Sidenote: Ilker from The Thinking Blog is running a competition in which you can WIN yourself a Ruffbook Tech! Entry cost is NOTHING and EVERYONE is welcome. How I love the blogosphere. :P

Update: In regards to the Ruffbook Tech’s Core 2 Duo processor, the salespage seems to be saying “Intel® Core™ Duo ULV 2.33GHz”, whereas the Products page states that you can indeed get “Optional Core 2 Duo processors”, though I’m none the wiser as to why they’re not showing up on the order page.

Facebook Spam - Stop The Insanity

Argh - When will my ’sensible’ friends on Facebook learn the ways of the web. *rolls eyes* This just in…

Attention all Facebook membeRs.
Facebook is recently becoming very overpopulated,
There have been many members complaining that Facebook
is becoming very slow.Record shows that the reason is
that there are too many non-active Facebook members
And on the other side too many new Facebook members.
We will be sending this messages around to see if the
Members are active or not,If you’re active please send
to other users using Copy+Paste to show that you are active
Those who do not send this message within 2 weeks,
The user will be deleted without hesitation to create more space,
If Facebook is still overpopulated we kindly ask for donations but until then send this message to all your friends and make sure you send
this message to show me that your active and not deleted.

Founder of Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg

First things first, spammerboys (and girls), ‘members’ isn’t spelt ‘membeRs’. Secondly, there is ALWAYS one or two spaces after a ‘full stop’. Thirdly, think rationally. If server strain was really an issue, reposting a message 10,000 isn’t gonna help. Fourth - would Mark Zuckerberg really be commenting on peoples funwalls? Don’t you think Facebook would have a slightly more reasonable way to approach people if there was an issue (e.g. E-MAIL). Fifth - Facebook already makes a bomb (Microsoft bought a slice for several hundred million - I’m sure it was solely so they could bake cakes for the Facebook staff), they would NOT ask for donations. Finally (and rather stupidly), the ‘Founder of Facebook’ should go BELOW the Mark’s name. Geez.

Also make note, there is not a user called XXXXXX who will hack your account if you don’t send this message to all your friends, so don’t fall for it. Seriously - the general population has gone crackers. We geeks need to band together.

Sidenote: Interesting review later on today of Ruff PC. Stay tuned…

Ugh - I feel poop. My net access has died at home and I’ve been ill quite a bit - sorry for the lack of posts.

Also, I shoutout to Ilker… Sorry I’ve not been able to get your post up. :S I’d just started writing it when my connection died.

Avot mV - YouTube For Your Phone

This is a sponsored review, don’t get me wrong. But since the advertiser has requested a full critique, rest assured I won’t be playing the Mr Nicey on this one… ;) On with the content!

The product site is simplistic. The background is a funny-shaded bluey-purple and the navigation is straight forward. First impressions? This baby would look good on an iPhone. Not so good on a normal PC, admittedly, given the fact that the page is designed to squeeze itself thin enough to fit on the average browser’s viewscreen. The top navigation is self-explanatory. There’s a home button for quick-access to the latest videos. There’s a “channels” button so you can have a good nosey. There’s a “myFavs” icon so you can view your favourite viral videos at the touch of a button, and there’s also a ‘vBox’ (video mailbox - rather cool idea).

The final navbar link is of a wand, which supposedly symbolises “Merlin”, the handy “recommended videos” buddy, who you can rely on to deliver you videos suited to your interests. The search bar, just beneath the site navigation, is incredibly efficient. It works fast and finds relevant videos, only on the odd occasion delivering a quirky search result. For example, type in “Affiliate Marketing”, and not only will you get the usual host of hypey “make money online” videos, but also “The Godfather”. Go figure.

Signup is relatively simple. You fill in your phonenumber, pick a password, then input your e-mail address and you’re all set to go. The site sources its videos from YouTube (possibly other sites - though I can’t confirm) and dumbs them down into a format that means mobile usage is simple and easy. It’s free and it’s impressive. To be perfectly honest, there’s not all that much I’d change besides making the background white (or black - for the sake of cleanness and usability).

Avot mV is the first solution to give mobile users unlimited access to any web-based video by providing an intelligent, content-based search capability that incorporates personal preferences so that users can quickly discover and choose from among billions of videos posted on the Web. Avot mV also provides point-and-click access to videos, making it easy for mobile users to navigate through content providers’ web sites without having to type out long URLs.

Once users select the videos they want to watch, Avot mV transfers the content to their web-enabled mobile devices within seconds, much faster than earlier mobile video solutions. The near-real time playback eliminates jitter, delays and grainy video quality. Mobile users experience the same fast, high-quality video they enjoy at their desktops—or even in front of their television sets. Avot mV also maximizes the size and clarity of the video display by removing unnecessary clutter from the mobile user’s screen. The result is the optimum display possible on a mobile device, no matter what, when or where the mobile user is watching.

The solution lets user organize the web videos in the playlist and watch them on the go. The user can create/add unlimited number of playlists and manage videos on the mobile device. This allows users to watch what they want, when they want by converting their mobile phones to an entertainment jukebox.

As quoted above, the corporate site provides a look at Avot Media itself, giving a little background to where AvotMV was developed. To be honest though - if Avot has plans to make their mobile video site successful, they’re going to have to spruce it up a whole lot more and change the way it’s viewed from a normal computer. Perhaps create a widget for Macs & Vista which people can install - notifying them when new videos become available. An RRS feed or an e-mail subscription would be nice, too, because at the moment - the casual visitor is likely to fly right over the site, enjoy it for the best part of 5 minutes then leave, never to return again. A feature on TechCrunch, GigaOM or Mashable wouldn’t go a miss either - if Avot is looking for some Web 2.0/next-gen surfers to target.

But heck - My marketing side has taken over. Verdict? Swish, lightweight and effective. I’ll buy it. Or at least I would, but the service is free. At the end of the day, I’ll give it a 4 outta 5. Apologies for the lack of blogging these past few days, additionally. I’ve been a little under the weather and have had a few days off school. :( I’m feeling a little better now though. I knew I could trust ye’ ol’ faithful RSS subscribers, however. Rock on guys (and gals)! Check out Avot’s official blog before you go and check out the gallery of the web-app running on the iPhone. Pretty darn swish.

Under Attack - War Is Coming

Going slightly off-topic the usual focus of the blog here, I’m pretty darn sure that a war is coming based on recent events. Check these stats out…

June - Pentagon hacked by Chinese Military. (FT)

September - Chinese military “infiltrates defense companies”. (FT)

September - Chinese military hacks Pentagon AGAIN. (vnunet)

September - UK foreign office attacked by Chinese hackers. (vnunet)

September - Chines military strikes again in France. (vnunet)

October - Chinese military attacks German networks. (vnunet)

December - MI5 contacts 300+ businesses warning of Chinese attacks. (vnunet)

December - Unexplained NSA (National Security Agency) website unavailability. (NSA)

December - US Military Labs Computers broken into. (Gadgetell).

Rather… We are IN a digital war. A technology war. A race for power. With China’s development of anti-satellite technology and the Great Firewall Of China, Iran’s undoubted nuclear warhead creation, North Korea’s embargo on e-mails, scanning and re-scanning everything that goes in and out of the country, Russia’s shady movements and secretive scientific research. If I didn’t know better, I’d say the Cold War never ended. Except it’s a little more of a World War than a Russia Vs. Britain feud.

What d’yall think? Pity we’re blocked by the Great Firewall Of China ourselves. Would have loved to have heard some views from inside the country.

2007 - Year Of The Fluffy-Animal-Celebrity-Social-Sex-Video Obsessed Gutted-Out USB Pet. You Happy Now?

Google Trends - 2007

It’s amazing how things change… In 2001, the world was hip ‘n’ dandy over Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban, The World Trade Center attack, Nostradamus (think end of the world style death and destruction), Anthrax and dare I say it, perhaps most horrifically of all, Windows XP! Six years on, the general public is more concerned over the iPhone’s well-being, Webkinz (the fluffy animal that’s been gutted out and kitted with a sub-par Fisherprice processor), TMZ (celebrity scandals), Transformers (geek domination or movie obsession?), YouTube (go online video!), Club Penguin (don’t ask), MySpace (icky/buggy social network full of glittery puff dolls), Heroes (I’m thinking movie/TV/video obsession), Facebook (the good social network we all need to use) and finally Anna Nicole Smith.

What will be thought of us, in 100 years time? In the space of half-a-decade, we’ve gone from paranoid, terrorist obsessed, war-mongering Googlers (if I can use that term, not working at Google myself) into a nation of fluffy-animal-celebrity-social-sex-video lovers. Some of us anyway. O_o This is a time when I’m proud to be different. Seriously - Club Penguin just cramps my style. Being aimed at “6-14 year olds”, even I, with absolutely no life outside my computer, clearly realise that this is SAD. ;)

You gotta love Google and the crazy stats that a trillion searches a second result in.

And Engadget? No need to source us at TechZi or anything - not like we reported the news FOUR days before you or anything. Seriously. I mean, sheesh… ;)

THIS article was via Gizmodo. We have the decency to source. Not that Engadget don’t or anything. Nah… Not at all. Sheesh, I mean… Ah. You know. There’s always the possibility they found it themselves. Especially when no-one else had blogged it apart from… Oh, geez. Just shut up David and get back to writing Affiliate Defined. Then you can go ‘n’ buy Engadget, that tiny little geeky site who pales in comparison to the l3t uber TechZi.
