Digg’s Big Day
Wow - one heck of a journey…
Click on the above picture for a more in-depth view.
HD-DVD got cracked, Digg users published the keys, Digg filtered out and moderated the stories, sparking a ’21st Century Style Revolt’. Digg dugg itself - Digg went down - hundreds of stories containing the filtered out key were published in retalliation to Digg’s blatent moderation and Digg users were forced to use Duggmirror to view the very Digg they once knew and loved. Thousands more angry comments were posted along with the posts and some sites benefited from some rather healthy traffic. Duggmirror nearly crashed under the Digg wait of Digg itself and Duggmirror alongside Digg went cooky. The BBC thought it’d fantastic to jump on the pile, covered the story, and just as Digg and Duggmirror were recovering, sent them back down into the abyss. I guess Forbes didn’t exactly do Kevin Rose any favours either! Uh… Did we mention Slashdot & Wikipedia too? Feels great to say ‘Digg got dugg!’ - doesn’t it? As it happens, Chris Pirillo broke the encrpytion key for his underwear, but to my knowledge, avoided getting Dugg on Digg by frantic-crazy Diggers.
If you’re confused, not to worry. The Digg/dugg/duggmirror/digg-attack/diggers-revolt situation has confused the poopy out of all of us.
By the end of the day though, we’ve got a flat-out apology from Kevin Rose, which ironically has become the most dugg article. EVER. The iPhone just got owned.
I’m worrying for the sanity of this Earth - my own health included. If It’s becoming common practice to value pairs of pants at $67,000,000 too now, we really should start worrying. What the!?!?! If there ever was a confusing day - it’s been today. I’m still utterly bewildered, but what the heck. It makes a good story.
UPDATE: I just found that this domain was registered. Dang…
UPDATE: And there’s even a nifty lil’ song!

What a bloody crazy day! I love the revolt!

Don’t we all… Don’t we all.

It was crazy, but on the otherhand Digg was completely at fault. I still can’t believe that they didn’t talk to a lawyer before they did anything like that.
And this is my favorite hex key so far

Sweet! I liked the Zazzle t-shirt though.

Which one? The one that’s nothing but the numbers? Because I’ve been tempted by this one http://www.cafepress.com/09f911029d74e35.128898537 Pirates Ho! Although it’s cafepress… so the shirt itself probably sucks
May 3rd, 2007 at 8:09 pm
I’ve got a link somewhere…
Though I do LOVE that Cafepress one. Though you’re totally right man - quality will SUCK.

I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining and comically written blog post. Cheers for giving me a good laugh as well as the 411 on what happened!

Great overview. After reading Kevin Rose’s blog post, I’m happy with how they dealt with it after the complaints.
May 4th, 2007 at 8:29 am
Coh Blimey!
May 4th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
It is really a big revolt! The table just got turned upside down.

Great post David, but I am falling behind in posts due to my busy schedule. Lot’s of reading to do!
May 5th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
The hyperactive users of Digg is mostly a bunch of pirates, anyway.
I remember many good posts being buried, while an article which explained how to crack Photoshop CS3 rose to stardom.
Sheeesshh…….a bunch of illegal guys, that’s what Digg crowds are.
May 5th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Totally… We hit the Digg front page at CarZi this morning with our video of the crash scene from the Gumball 3000 accidents. Either the Digg moderators were contacted by a 3rd party (AHEM! Flashback to… THIS VERY POST?) or the looney community at Digg buried it.
Why, though? They like destruction.
May 5th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
Yeah, the only thing Digg crowd needs is destruction, whether it is of HDDVD or CarZi or something else
Nice of you to comment in just minutes, David! Keep up the good work!
One more thing, the graphic bar at the bottom with links to all your blogs is acting up sometimes(I’m on FireFox 2.0)
May 5th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Hmm… I’ve not had any such problems. (I’m using FF2, too.)
I’ll look into it though! As for fast commenting - heck. I’m a blogger, aint I?
May 5th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Oops, forgot this -
Why isn’t there a link to the comment, like #comment-2292 inside the comment box for each comment? I feel that is something of a handicap. Its minor issue, but get Nate on it, will ya?
I can’t link to a comment I liked, because I can’t find the comment ID.
May 5th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Uh… I’ll get Nate on it, like you say.
LMAO!
May 5th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Come to think of it… You’re not the first to mention this. I’m sure Timo said the same thing a while back.
Could it be Brian’s Threaded Comments? I don’t know. But yeah - I’ll get Nate to take a look.
May 5th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Whoa, you’re quick!
Now, I’ve got another question:
What is this Gravatar/MBL avatar plugin stuff?
I’m too lazy to Google, so if you can tell me…..
Also, I may review your blog sometime soon, so how should I do it?
May 5th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
I’ll go check which plugin it is…
MyAvatars: http://www.napolux.com/projects/myavatars/
And before you ask, yes. Nate installed it.
Blog review? Schaweet!
Just post it on your blog sometime so I can take a look. Heck - I’m considering doing a blog review thingy like John Chow!
May 5th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Yeah, John Chow thingy will get you loads of backlinks, if it gets popular…..
May 5th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
The real question… Would you take part?
May 5th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Don’t you have per-post comment feed? It would be helpful for those who want to check out the replies to comments they made….
May 5th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Uh… I’ll get Nate on that too.
*poor man*
May 5th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Of course, I would
Anyway, I have done it for JC, and will do it for you, primarily because, well…….I like you
Most kids of your age are playing, but you’re different. And I am different not for my age, but for my surroundings - here, we don’t have even regular internet users.
You can take my word of honour…(if I had one, ie
May 5th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Thanks man!
I like you too.
As for the word of honour thing… LOL!
May 5th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Doesn’t Timo have a blog?
And did you settle between yourself for that break of trust between you in some posting issue?
May 5th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
That was Timothy, not Timo. ‘Tis all so confusing.
May 6th, 2007 at 4:18 am
Whatever………..
