Beryl - Vista Looks Outdated

Thanks Chris for sending me the link to this YouTube video. Incredible. Vista positively looks dated! Have you seen this 3D desktop? I’ve heard people raving for the past couple of weeks about a new uber-Linuz which looks spiffy, but till just now, I’ve seen no reason to take them seriously.

I’m serious - If all my software could be ported to Linux, I’d be over there right now. This thing looks incredible! ;)

Thats slaps Vista right in the face. Back on XP now anyway.

I’m considering flicking over to XP again till Vista gets some decent software support and some drivers which WORK on 64-bit systems, too.

I’m also an XP junkie, I don’t think I could lose it for work. But a friend runs Beryl on Ubuntu, and my second machine is just crying out for it. It doesn’t demand much in the way of hardware either (unlike Vista!)

However linux is coming along very nicely. I’ve seen Photoshop work on it, and from what I’ve used of Open Office it kicks Microsoft’s butt.

I’m –>

Can’t say I’m a big fan of Open Office…

But if Photoshop works, I guess that’s just another plus! ;)

You could probably run most of your Windows sofware with WINE & VMWare.

I run Office 2005, Visual Studio 2005 and a few other applications in Windows XP Pro with Parallels on my MacBook Pro.

I run Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional and Office 2007 in a virtual Vista environment (VM Ware) under Ubuntu and have no problems getting my work done. Because my Linux desktop already has plenty of eye candy, I turned off all that stuff in the virtual Vista install. I switched back to Ubuntu, after 8 months using Vista, because adding peripherals was HELL on Vista–even the certified Vista-compatible ones worked way better with Ubuntu.

I guess I am one of a few who could care less about pretty, flashy features in an OS. I use XP Pro still and have everything set to Win 98 style. I like it simple and to the point. I know how to open a folder and dont need a fancy animation to accompany it. Save on resources. Heck I don’t even use wallpaper, just a simple black background works fine, that way I can see all of my icons clearly :)

I’m all for simplicity, but yeah… Vista might look fancy, but on the inside Microsoft has really gone over the top in re-organizing everything about Windows. The menus, everything. Nothing is where you think it should be. :(

But, they didn’t really show you the gazillion steps they had to do inorder to get that working did they?

[P.S. I’m just trolling, since I don’t have the bandwidth available to view the video, and I also believe that there’s more to Vista than what meets the eye]
